Pop music history for everyone
Pop music is the short name to popular music, but you can say that pop music is the music that all the time, during its history, had a real success to the public. First pop songs it is believed to be the songs singers performed in the Victoria era, because there were songs knew by everyone. But the pop music really gained success in 1926, when music could be recorded into records. So now this music had even more appeal to the public. The records could be listened at wind-up gramophones.
Professional songwriters for pop music began to have real success, like Tin Pan Alley. And so the first pop stars began to rise, starting with Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra etc. They both sold millions of records and had fans all around the world, so you could say their music was popular or “pop music”. Today we have many pop charts, but in the past there weren’t any, until 1952, when the chart Top Twenty was created. A sub genre of pop music is rock'n'roll, and the one that had the most success playing this genre was, of course, the famous Elvis Presley. Between the 1950s and the 1960s, he was the biggest international star. His great success was only conquered by the famous Beatles. They were a pop group, formed by men that wrote its own songs and had great catchy songs. They even created their own culture and had fans all around the world. In 1970 they decided to break the group, but even so, they managed to influence the pop music for ever. Another singer that had a great success was Elton John, who was both singing and performing his songs at the piano.
In the 1980s and the 1990s was the time for other bands to have their share of success: Wham! (the band in which George Michael performed), later Take That, Backstreet Boys and 'N Sync. All of them were boys’ bands, with real success to both female and also male audience. Even after they had issues and decided to break up, the singers continued to have the same fame, for example Robbie Williams (from Take That) or Justin Timberlake (from the band called 'N Sync). Later other American bands of females had success, like Spice Girls, and also solo artists, like Mariah Carey, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera or Beyonce.
